Retinal Surgery Patient Information

You will receive a prescription for eye drops and will be told when to start them and how often to use them.

You will be told the day and time to visit Dr. Hopp's office. Please bring all drops prescribed. If you are from out of town you will be followed by your Ophthalmologist or Optometrist once you return.

It is normal to have pain and liquid discharge from your eye following surgery. You can take Tylenol and may need Gravol also. Don't rub your eye - just dab fluid away.

Wear your eye shield today until you can blink your eye easily. Then for one week you should wear it to bed while sleeping to protect your eye from rubbing on bed sheets.

No heavy lifting or strenuous activity for two weeks. Take it easy.

You can wash your hair in a couple of days.

Retinal surgery is successful about 90% of the time but additional surgery may be required if this is not the case. There is a chance a cataract may develop following surgery but this can be handled at a later date.

You can get your glasses checked 6 - 8 weeks after surgery.

IF GAS or AIR WAS PUT IN YOUR EYE

Instructions will be given how to position your head. The bubble of gas needs to push the retinal detachment into position. By adjusting your head, the bubble will push in the right place.

Depending on the type of gas used, you may have to keep that position for up to 10 days 18 hours per day.

Do not return home over high mountain passes or plan on air travel for up to six weeks following surgery.
