Central Vein Occlusion

A central retinal vein occlusion is a blockage of the vein at the back of the eye resulting in hemorrhage or bleeding into the retina. There is usually no treatment for this but if this results in a rise in pressure in the eye, then laser treatment is performed in order to reduce the pressure in the eye.

There is no treatment for decreased vision in this condition. The condition either stabilizes or vision improves but in a small percentage of people, glaucoma develops and this may result in complete blindness and a painful eye unless laser treatment is performed.
The underlying cause for it is usually high blood pressure or diabetes, and occasionally clotting disorders of the blood. We usually do not investigate you for any underlying cause for this problem unless it develops in both eyes.
