Iritis
Iritis
is an inflammation of the iris or coloured part of the
eye.
This
results in symptoms consisting of pain and sensitivity
to light as well as redness. This is diagnosed with the
use of the slit lamp in the doctor's office.
|
 |
Debris
and cells are seen floating around the anterior chamber,
or front part of the eye.
This
condition is treated with drops consisting of cortisone
drops and drops to dilate the pupil in order to relax
the muscles within the eye and relieve pain.
Occasionally,
iritis is associated with underlying disorders such
as arthritis, bowel disease and, rarely, lung disease.
|
One
of the most common causes I see is iritis associated
with lower back pain, and a blood test can be done to
confirm this diagnosis. There are other rare causes of
iritis.
Iritis is usually a recurrent disease and occasional
requires the use of injections of cortisone around the
eye or even oral cortisone.
